The judges’ faces fell the moment they learned one of the trio had joined only a day earlier, and they’d never performed together. It seemed like a recipe for disaster, and no one, least of all Simon, looked thrilled about what was coming. But then, they started. In an instant, the room flipped. Simon’s laughter erupted, uncontrollable and contagious, until he was clutching his stomach, tears in his eyes. By the end, the entire audience was on their feet, roaring with approval.

Auditions are important in show business. Performers try to showcase their talent while the audience decides if they are good enough. And as we all know from watching talent competitions, good impressions are critical for success.

And on America’s Got Talent, auditions are critical for building fan support, which plays into how well an act does in the overall competition. The more people that love your act, the more chance you’ll make through the judge cuts and into the semi-final round.

But this America’s Got Talent audition is proof that things don’t have to go perfectly in order to win with the judges or the audience. Flaws and mistakes happen and sometimes, how you react to them is every bit as important as the underlying performance. Or so it seems.

Our expectations drop when we find out one of the trio has just joined the group the day before and they’ve never performed together. None of the judges seem too excited about what appears to be coming.
